Establishing Professional Presence to Promote a Healthy Work Environment

Healthcare settings expose the workforce to a multiplicity of complex and challenging

situations on a daily basis. Some of these situations usually require leaders and nurse clinicians

to possess a wide range of skills or abilities to respond effectively. Nurse leaders and clinicians

may possess clinical intelligence, which gives them confidence when faced with such problems.

However, many of these complex situations require more than specialty knowledge to be

resolved. This reflection explores how advanced professional nurses may manage these

challenging workplace situations and demonstrate how social and emotional intelligence power

skills can promote authentic leadership, professional presence, and social presence.

, Self-awareness

Self-awareness is an essential tool for advanced nurse leaders and a core aspect of

authentic and effective leadership (Harley, 2024). Complex workplace situations and the

dynamic needs of modern work settings require self-aware leaders who comprehend their own

abilities and weaknesses. As an advanced professional nurse, managing difficult situations at

work is crucial to achieve individual, collective, and organizational success. Nurses who are

struggling with a negative attitude, burnout, or stress at work are likely to report poor task

performance. Nurse leaders with high self-awareness skills have a profound understanding of

their strengths, motivations, and values as well as limitations, which can help them manage these

situations and promote a healthy workplace environment (Brooks, 2025). Heightened self-

awareness implies that nurse leaders have a clear understanding of who they are, their values,

and their motivations. understanding to help others and foster joy at work if nurses lack a clear

understanding of who they are, what they are capable of, their values, and weaknesses. Self-

awareness enables advanced professional nurses to thrive in or manage challenging situations

using a growth mindset, mindfulness, patience, self-confidence, and self-efficacy.

Self-management

Another powerful social and emotional intelligence skill that can help advanced

professional nurses manage challenging situations in the workplace is self-management.

Katsiroumpa et al. (2025) described some of the aspects of self-management that can help nurses

deal with demanding situations, including resilience and stress management. Advanced

professional nurses with self-management skills can be proactive and adaptive in challenging

situations rather than reactive. Self-management focuses on whether nurse leaders are able to

accept responsibility, accountability, and contain their behavior within tolerable limits (Western
