Topic A2 - Families and Households

04 - Outline and explain two ways that social change may affect
patterns of marriage.
(10 marks)
One way in which social change may affect patterns of marriage is through
feminist movement. This has encouraged women to expect more and tolerate
less in marriage. Therefore, women are more likely to delay marriages until they
find the person that meets all their expectations or not get married at all. This

typically in the UK but becoming less common. However, in other cultures like
the Trinidad, tribe where women are dominant and take on the breadwinner role
compared to men who were emotional and submissive.
Cultural variation in gender roles has a large influence on other societies and the
roles that both women and men play in the household.
