Reducing the Risks of Opioids
, Situations That Can Increase
Risk For Harmful Outcomes For
Patients On Opioid Therapy
When taken by patients with sleep-disordered breathing,
opioids can decrease respiratory drive.
Older patients may have an increased risk of falls and
consequently suffer fractures when they take opioids.
Opioids may result in greater peak effect in patients with
hepatic insufficiency, which reduces the dosage level for
respiratory depression.
Patients with alcohol and substance abuse disorder are
predisposed patients to opioid use disorder compared to othe
patients.
