Reducing the Risks of Opioids

, Situations That Can Increase
Risk For Harmful Outcomes For
Patients On Opioid Therapy
 When taken by patients with sleep-disordered breathing,
opioids can decrease respiratory drive.
 Older patients may have an increased risk of falls and
consequently suffer fractures when they take opioids.
 Opioids may result in greater peak effect in patients with
hepatic insufficiency, which reduces the dosage level for
respiratory depression.
 Patients with alcohol and substance abuse disorder are
predisposed patients to opioid use disorder compared to othe
patients.
