Student Name Submission Date Student ID
, 1. Introduction
Being in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that the pandemic has
significantly disrupted human life on earth. Scholars and analysts all over the world are now
developing mindset that world is expected to be appeared different after this pandemic from
the one which we knew it would have been (Croucher, 2020). Things are significantly changed.
This particular research focuses on exploring the impacts of novel coronavirus (COVID-19)
pandemic on career aspirations, intentions and expectations of international students studying
business in Australia.
1.1. Aim of the Research
COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the education system of various countries including
Australia. Rapid response to the outbreak in Australia has exposed over-dependence of
Australia on international markets as it is clear that international students from all over the
globe contribute around $38 Billion to Australian economy every year, enrich social fabric in the
country and support more than 150,000 jobs in the country (Parker, 2020). This pandemic has
resulted in collapsing international students’ numbers in Australia because of changed career
aspirations, intentions, expectations and behaviors of international business students in
Australia (Shakespeare-Finch, 2020). The aim of this research is to assess and analyze the true
career aspirations of international students as these not only bring diverse benefits to
institutions but also wider the economy. This research helps in identifying the negative impacts
of COVID-19 pandemic on Australian education system by assessing and evaluating the pre-
pandemic and post pandemic intentions of international students because there are a lot of
industries or sectors of Australia which are dependent on international students among which
transport sector, utilities sector, retail and hospitality sector and real estate sector are at top of
the list (Tan, E.J., 2020).
1.2. Research Background
It is clear that international students have a profound impact on the strength of Australian
economy as well as educational system (Higginson, 2020). It is evident that before COVID-19,
the strength of international students in Australia was more than that of the population of
, Canberra and these students contribute around $38 Billion to the Australian economy. Along
with economic impact, this worldwide pandemic has also badly affected the career aspirations
of international students in Australia because of restrictions imposed due to COVID-19, closure
of universities, lock down in the country and loss of livelihood of students (Clarke, 2020). Also,
international travel restrictions, monetary policy decisions and strict lockdown in the country
have significantly reduced the number of international students in Australia due to shutting
down of accommodation, travel restrictions, and shutting down of academic services
(Giridharan, B., 2020).
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, government of Australia has announced relief
packages of billions of dollars for workforces and other industries but has not announced
anything significant for international students who contribute a lot in the economy (Rogers,
2020). This little help and ignorance from the government has resulted in changed expectations
and intentions of international students along with changed career aspirations as a result of this
pandemic (Flack, 2020). Due to these reasons, majority of international students in Australia
especially those studying business subjects is thinking to move from Australia who once have
aim to take permanent residency in Australia before the pandemic and career aspirations are
changing accordingly (Whitfield, 2020).
1.3. Academia Benefits
This research has a lot of academic benefits as this will helps authorities and Australian
Government to find gaps in policy making and the positive as well as negative outcomes of
supporting international students in Australia during this pandemic. This will not only improve
education sector in Australia by maintaining required strength of students but also open a lot of
ways for international students to be well accommodated and supported to achieve their
educational objectives in much better way (Wolinsky, 2020). Also, this research will help in
addressing the key factors associated with international students’ strength in the country and
their expectations and intentions which directly affect the education sector in Australia
(Aristovnik, A., 2020).
