Dental heath is a forte that involves diagnosing and caring for problems associated with
teeth and oral diseases. The population ratio to the number of dentists in practice has increased
over the years. According to America Dental Association, the ratio ranges from 108 dentists for
every 100,000 people. Most of the dentists undertake private practice and work as general Dental
Practitioners while a small number has ventured in the corporate world pocketing upfront pay
and taking advantage of the readily available opportunities. In this regard, this paper seeks to
explain a career in dental medicine and its requirements.
The unique style of practice by Dentists of coordinating hands and eyes has motivated me
to join this filed. Their quench to assist others improve and maintain their oral hygiene, assist in
helping better the quality of life, being involved in great scientific developments and inventions,
educate people on the importance of dental health, enjoying being my own boss through
practicing in my own heath centre and as well detect diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular
has drawn me towards practicing dentist as a career. In addition, dentist’s knowledge on human
anatomy and dental diseases has greatly intrigued me not to mention the great salaries they enjoy
(Brooks, 2015). Moreover, the practice will give me a chance to be active the whole day instead
of being glued to a computer screen. In my Forensic Science class, I have dealt with some
specialty cases that deal directly with teeth. I found it quite fascinating that a dentist has the
ability to restore a patient’s smile by exploring the new scientific biotechnology and gene
therapy. This has led to my research questions; what really makes up a dentist unique? What is
all involved in becoming a dentist? How long does it take to go to school? How much does a
dentist earn? And which specialties can one further to become a dentist?
