Kidney Functions
o Regulates electrolytes
o Maintains acid-base balance

Obstructive Uropathy
o Structural or functional obstruction in the Urinary System
o Born w/stenosis or obstruction = reflux or regurgitation of urine
o Most common: hydronephrosis (build of fluid in kidneys and ureters
o Stagment = infection
o Bacterial infections and recurrence of UTI
o Flomax (tamsulosin) for high pressure/ flow of urine
o Will need surgy (ureteral stent, pyelostomy tube, or cutaneous ureterostomy tubes)
Renal assessments
o Daily weight, Vital signs, I&Os, Labs (BUN, Creatinine, GFR)
o 1 KG = 1L weigh loss or gain , Normal UO: 20-30 ml/hr (1ml/kg/hr) MATH QUESTION
Renal failure
o FAILS TO:
▪ Regulate blood pressure → Hypertension
▪ Maintain acid-base balance → metabolic acidosis
▪ REGULATE ELECTROLYTES → HYPO/HYPERNATREMIA (depends on the amount of
water in the body), HYPERKALEMIA, HYPERPHOSPHATEMIA, HYPOCALCEMIA
▪ Removes wastes → toxicity
