,A Note to Instructors
The manual accompanying the 9th edition of Reading for Thinking includes updated answer
keys for all the exercises in Chapters 1–11. It also includes answer keys for the two sets of
longer readings and questions that appear in the new edition, “Reviewing with Longer
Readings” (following Chapter 6) and “Putting it All Together” (following Chapter 11).
In addition to the answer keys, there are additional activities and assignments focusing on the
comprehension and critical reading skills most likely to need additional practice and review. I
tried to pack the 9th edition with numerous and varied exercises—enough to make sure that
instructors won’t run out of material no matter how many reviews they complete. But having
taught college reading for decades, I know how easy it is to use up the material that’s in the
book, especially if you like to individualize instruction and not complete exercises in their
entirety unless students require it.
I wish you much success with your classes and hope that the 9th edition of Reading for
Thinking, along with the exercises and suggestions included in the manual, prove useful for
both you and your students.
Best Wishes,
Laraine Flemming
