❖ Siddhartha was a prince, very wealthy and royal
❖ Priests predicted he would become the buddha
❖ His father wanted him to be king not buddha so he distracted Siddhartha with servants
and amusements.
❖ Prince leaves the palace and sees people suffering
❖ Journey of Ascetic - practice a severe self discipline for religious reasoning
❖ He becomes a wandering monk and begs for food and wear simple clothing as well as
having no shoes and shaves his head
❖ This lasted for six years to achieve enlightenment
❖ He decides to sit under a Bodhi tree until he figures out how to end suffering (45 days)
❖ During those days, he is tempted by evil spirits
❖ After 45 days, he is enlightened and is Buddha
❖ Buddha means awakened one
❖ Four noble truths in Buddhism
a. Everybody knows suffering and sorrow
b. We suffer because our desires bind us to the rebirth cycle
c. We can end this suffering by eliminating desires
d. You can do this by following the Eightfold path.

❖ The goal is to reach Nirvana = Enlightenment. ANYBODY can achieve Nirvana (similar

❖ Achieved by accepting the four noble truths and following the eightfold path
❖ Buddha IS NOT a god - He is a teacher and spiritual leader
❖ Believes in reincarnation and karma but doesn’t believe in Caste system
❖ Buddhism spreads more to China - spread by merchants etc., cultural diffusion
❖ Two branches!!!
➢ Theravada - Strict (monks) - Like orthodox christianity
➢ Mahayana - Average buddhism - Like reform christianity
