PLEURA
what is pleura?
👉
Pleura is a thin, slippery membrane that surrounds your lungs. It is made up of
mesothelium (a special type of lining).
• You have two pleural sacs, one on each side of the mediastinum (the space
between your lungs).
• Each sac has two layers:
• Parietal pleura – the outer layer (touches the chest wall)
• Visceral pleura – the inner layer (touches the lungs)
Both layers are connected at the hilum of the lungs and form the pleural cavity in
between.

Comparison of Visceral and Parietal Pleura:-
1. Development
• Visceral Pleura: From splanopleuric mesoderm
• Parietal Pleura: From somatopleuric mesoderm
, 2. Position
• Visceral: Covers the lungs and enters the fissures
• Parietal: Lines the inner chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum
3. Nerve Supply
• Visceral:
• Sympathetic nerves (T2–T5)
• Parasympathetic from vagus nerve
• Parietal:
• Intercostal nerves
• Phrenic nerve
4. Sensitivity
• Visceral: Does not feel pain (insensitive)
• Parietal: Feels pain, pressure, and touch (sensitive)
5. Blood Supply
• Visceral: Bronchial vessels
• Parietal: Intercostal, pericardiac, and phrenic vessels
6. Lymphatic Drainage
• Visceral: Tracheobronchial lymph nodes
• Parietal: Intercostal lymph nodes
