Introduction to the Pancreas
The pancreas is a vital gland in the human body with both exocrine and endocrine
functions. The term originates from Greek: pan meaning “all” and kreas meaning
“flesh.” This dual-function gland plays a crucial role in digestion and metabolism:
The exocrine part secretes pancreatic juice, rich in digestive enzymes.
The endocrine part secretes hormones, notably insulin, which regulates blood
sugar levels.
Structurally, the pancreas is a soft, lobulated, elongated organ, nestled deep within
the abdominal cavity.

Location and Orientation
The pancreas lies transversely across the posterior abdominal wall, positioned
at the level of the first and second lumbar vertebrae (L1–L2). It is located
posterior to the stomach, separated by the lesser sac, and is oriented obliquely.
