is to ground learners into matters of information sources, systems and usage. In particular it aims
at enabling learners identify and evaluate a wide variety of information sources and services.

OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE
WEEK 0: Introduction (Your context, Your Goals)
This lesson will help you introduce yourself to your fellow students and your lecturers most
specifically during the online sessions or even face to face before your academic interaction
starts. Please feel free to share any experiences in collection development as you pursue this
degree.
WEEK 1: Concepts and Objectives of Collection Development
In this first lesson we lay a foundation for the entire course explaining the role of collection
development which provides an introduction to the basic concepts of users and their needs,
and collection maintenance. The purpose of this lesson is to enable you understand the
importance of collection development.
WEEK 2: User Needs and Collection Development
In this lesson we explain user needs concept and collection maintenance to increase the
learner’s awareness. The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize learners with user needs which
drive collection development in a library.
WEEK 3: Types of Resources and Formats
In this third lesson you are introduced to the different types of resources and formats as
considered in in collection development the purpose of this lesson is to enable you understand
the different types of resources as applicable in the library and information collection.
WEEK 4: Censorship
In this lesson we introduce you to the concept of censorship, role of publishers and booksellers
in collection development. This provides an insight on the importance of censorship in libraries
and the need to establish reputable publishers and booksellers in the publishing industry. The
purpose of this lesson is to enable you understand the importance of censorship awareness,
publishers and booksellers in collection development.
