318 Exam 2
TOPIC 5
What are the mechanism of action, indications, adverse effects of the selected ANS, CNS, and
PNS drugs?
- Adrenergic Agonist (Fight or Flight)
o Adrenergic agonists stimulate adrenergic receptors in the sympathetic nervous
system. Adrenergic antagonists block stimulation of adrenergic receptors in the
sympathetic nervous system.
o
o Adrenergic receptors fall under 4 categories:
▪ alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1 and beta 2.
▪ Alpha 1
● Increases cardiac contractility, vasoconstriction
● Dilates pupils, decreases salivary gland secretion
● Increases bladder and prostate contraction
▪ Alpha 2
● Inhibits norepinephrine release
o Promotes vasodilation and decreased BP
● Decreases GI motility and tone
o DOES NOT ACT THE SAME WAY AS THE REST OF
ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
▪ Beta1 receptors
● Increases cardiac contractility, heart rate
● Increases renin secretion and increases BP
▪ Beta2 receptors
● Decreases GI tone and motility
● Bronchodilation
● Increases blood flow in skeletal muscles
● Relaxes smooth muscles of uterus
● Activates liver glycogenolysis
