# Chapter 1: Basic Mental Health
## Mental Status Examina on (MSE)
A Mental Status Examina on (MSE) is a systema c assessment of a
client’s current state of mind, encompassing several core components:
### 1. Level of Consciousness
- **Alert:** Fully responsive, answers ques ons appropriately.
- **Lethargic:** Opens eyes and responds but is drowsy and easily falls
asleep.
- **Stuporous:** Responds only to vigorous or painful s muli with brief
responses.
, - **Comatose:** No response to s muli; may exhibit abnormal
posturing such as decor cate or decerebrate rigidity.
### 2. Physical Appearance
Observa ons regarding hygiene, grooming, and appropriateness of
dress.
### 3. Behavior
- **Mood:** The pa ent’s internal emo onal state (self-reported).
- **Affect:** The objec ve expression of mood (e.g., flat or
inappropriate affect).
### 4. Cogni ve and Intellectual Abili es
- **Orienta on:** Person, place, me.
- **Memory:**
- Immediate (repeat a list of words)
- Recent (recall events of the current day)
- Remote (recall events from the past, e.g., date of birth)
