Unit 1: Drugs Acting on Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
1. Introduction to ANS
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls involuntary body functions such as heart rate,
digestion, respiratory rate, etc.
It has two divisions:
- Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)
- Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)
2. Sympathetic Nervous System (Adrenergic System)
Adrenergic Drugs: These stimulate the sympathetic nervous system by activating adrenergic
receptors.
Classification:
- Direct Acting: Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Dopamine
- Indirect Acting: Amphetamine, Tyramine
- Mixed Acting: Ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine
Mechanism of Action:
- Stimulate alpha and beta adrenergic receptors
- Increase heart rate, blood pressure, and bronchodilation
Therapeutic Uses:
- Epinephrine: Anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest
