The French Revolution was a major turning point in European history, lasting from 1789 to 1799. It led to the downfall of the monarchy and a complete change in France's social and political structure. The revolution's ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity had a lasting impact worldwide. Causes of the Revolution The revolution was caused by a combination of factors: Social Inequality: French society was divided into three estates. The First Estate (clergy) and the Second Estate (nobility) enjoyed significant privileges and paid no taxes. The Third Estate, which included peasants, artisans, and the middle class, bore the entire tax burden and had no political rights. Economic Crisis: France was on the brink of bankruptcy due to expensive wars, including the American War of Independence. King Louis XVI's extravagant lifestyle also contributed to the financial strain. Poor harvests led to rising bread prices, causing widespread hunger and unrest. Enlightenment Ideas: Philosophers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu advocated for ideas such as individual rights, a government based on a social contract, and the separation of powers. These ideas inspired the Third Estate to question the absolute power of the monarchy. Key Events and Phases The revolution can be divided into several phases: The Beginning (1789): The revolution began when King Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates-General to approve new taxes. The Third Estate, demanding equal representation, declared itself the National Assembly and took the Tennis Court Oath, vowing to create a new constitution. The revolution's symbolic start was the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, where an angry mob attacked the fortress, a symbol of royal tyranny. The Monarchy's Downfall (1789–1792): The National Assembly abolished feudalism, created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in August 1789, and drafted a new constitution. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette attempted to flee France in 1791 but were caught, which completely eroded public trust. The Reign of Terror (1793–1794): Following the execution of Louis XVI, the radical Jacobin club, led by Maximilien Robespierre, took control. They established the Committee of Public Safety and initiated a period of extreme violence known as the Reign of Terror. Thousands of "enemies of the revolution" were executed by the guillotine. This phase ended with the execution of Robespierre himself in 1794. The Directory and Napoleon (1795–1799): After the Reign of Terror, a new government called the Directory was established. However, it was weak and corrupt. This instability paved the way for a young and popular military general, Napoleon Bonaparte, to seize power in a coup in 1799, effectively ending the revolution. Outcomes and Legacy The French Revolution had a profound impact: It ended the absolute monarchy in France and feudalism. It spread the ideas of liberty, equality, and nationalism across Europe and the world. It led to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, who would dominate Europe for nearly two decades. It inspired future revolutions and democratic movements, showing that common people could overthrow a powerful monarchy.
