Access Point - The computer or network device that serves an as interface between devices and the
network
Application Architecture - The way in which the functions of the applications layer software are spread
among the clients and servers in the network
Attenuation - Loss of power in a signal as it travels from the sending device to the receiving device
BN - Known as Backbone Network
Routed backbones - move packets along the backbone on the basis of their network layer address,
commonly used to connect different buildings on same enterprise
Switched backbones - most common type of BN, used in the distribution layer of buildings
Baselining - Applications that will use the network and identify the location of each, which the
information is added to the emerging network documentation
Building Network - Known as the distribution layer
Distributes network traffic to and from LANs
Campus Network - Known as the core layer
Connects all buildings on campus, usually faster
Circuit Loading - Amount of data transmitted on a circuit
Content Caching - Storing other people's Web data that is closer to your users
Content Delivery - Storing content for your Web sites on the content delivery provider's servers spread
around the Internet to reduce traffic on your Internet connection. The content delivery provider's servers
contain the static content on your pages such as banners and graphics files. Software on your Web server
locates the nearest content delivery server to the user (based on his or her IP address) and changes the
references on your Web pages to draw the static content from that server. Content delivery was
pioneered by Akamai, which is one of the leading content delivery services on the Internet.
CPE - Customer Premises Equipment - device resides at customer site (connects w/ MPLS service
, provider)
Data Flow - The movement of data among processes, stores, sources, and destinations
Simplex - one way transmission, radios and TV
Half-Duplex - two way transmission, but only in one direction at a time
Full-Duplex - transmit in both directions simultaneously
Dedicated-Circuit - A circuit that runs from a breaker box to specific outlets.
ESP - Encapsulating Security Payload
A header used to provide a mix of security services in IP4 and IP6. ESP can be used alone or in
combination with the IP authentication header (AH)
Forwarding Table - Table lists the Ethernet address of the computer connected to each port on the
switch.
FTTH - Fiber to the home
Running fiber optic cables into your home
Intermodulation noise - Special type of cross-talk. The signals from two circuits combine to form a new
signal that falls into a frequency band reserved for another signal.
Internet Exchange Points - ISPs exchange data at Internet exchange points (IXPs)
ISP Tiers - Tier 1 - backbone of the Internet, interconnect with other ISPs with IXPs
Tier 2 - service provider that utilizes combination of paid transits with Tier 1 and Tier 3 ISPs for
customers
Tier 3 - strictly purchases internet transit
Load Balancer - Dedicated network device that acts as a traffic manager at the front of the server farm.
All requests are directed to the load balancer at its IP address.
