Schizophrenia
, Diagnostic features
Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that
involves a mix of cognitive, emotional, and
behavioral problems. There’s no single symptom that
can definitively diagnose it, but a combination of
signs and symptoms is used to identify the
condition. These symptoms affect a person’s ability
to work or maintain social relationships, and people
with schizophrenia can experience different
combinations of symptoms.
For a diagnosis, a person must show at least two of
the following symptoms over a one-month period (or
longer):
#Delusions (false beliefs)
*Hallucinations (hearing or
seeing things that aren’t there)
* Disorganized speech (incoherent
or nonsensical speech)
Other symptoms like disorganized behavior (acting
strangely) and negative symptoms (such as a lack of
motivation or emotional expression) can also be
present. Even if symptoms improve with treatment, a
diagnosis can still be made if the clinician believes
the symptoms would have lasted without treatment.
