Parts of Speech are categories or types of words based on their function in a sentence.
Understanding parts of speech helps us use words correctly and build clear sentences.
Every word you use in a sentence belongs to one of these categories. There are eight main parts
of speech, but some also consider articles and determiners as part of the system.
1. Nouns
Definition:
Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. They tell us what or who the
sentence is about.
Types of Nouns:
Common nouns: general names for things (teacher, city, book)
Proper nouns: specific names and always capitalized (Maria, Manila, Eiffel Tower)
Concrete nouns: things you can see or touch (table, cat, flower)
Abstract nouns: ideas or qualities you cannot touch (freedom, love, honesty)
Collective nouns: names for groups (team, family, flock)
Examples:
The teacher explained the lesson.
Maria loves to read.
We visited the park yesterday.
Love is a powerful feeling.
Usage:
Nouns can be subjects, objects, or complements in a sentence.
2. Pronouns
Definition:
Pronouns replace nouns to avoid repetition and make sentences less wordy.

Personal pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
Possessive pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs
Reflexive pronouns: myself, yourself, himself
Demonstrative pronouns: this, that, these, those
Relative pronouns: who, whom, which, that
Examples:
John is tired. He wants to rest.
This book is mine.
She did it by herself.
3. Verbs
Definition:
Verbs are words that express actions, events, or states of being. They tell us what the subject
does or is.
Types of Verbs:
Action verbs: express physical or mental action (run, jump, think)
Linking verbs: connect the subject to a description or state (is, am, are, was, were)
Auxiliary (helping) verbs: help the main verb show tense, mood, or voice (have, has,
will, can)
Examples:
She runs every morning. (action)
He is happy. (linking)
They have finished their work. (auxiliary)
Verb Tenses:
Present: I walk
Past: I walked
