SUMMER MEMORIES
DEVELOPING IDEAS
Drawing from memories from my summer holidays, I created 5 artworks depicting scenes
which encapsulated my experiences. These artworks were made in the format of postcards to
convey the concept of memories as they are used to share and hold memories when saved.

In this first canvas (Place) I painted it in an Impressionistic style inspired by Claude
Monet’s work ‘The cliff walk by Pourville’, because it was a calm and tranquil scene
and I felt that the visible , flowing brush strokes conveyed that more than a realistic
style would’ve. I Also think the brush strokes mimicked the movement of the waves
that could be seen in that scene. When starting the work I applied a base coat using
watercolour paint before painting on top of it using acrylics, which resulted in the
watercolour coming up through the canvas and degrading the painting.

Hands are one element of the human form which can be particularly

believe are most useful to understand what a person is trying to
communicate, something that is evident across genres and mediums. I was
inspired to create both a work on paper and on canvas with hands as a
central feature because I felt they would help convey my theme and
concept most effectively.
