Definition
The South African Council for Educators (SACE) defines a professional teacher as
an educator who possesses the requisite qualifications, is registered with SACE,
adheres to the SACE Code of Professional Ethics, accepts accountability for
professional judgments, engages in continuous professional development, and upholds
the highest ethical standards in all professional relationships and duties. This
encompasses respecting the dignity of learners, promoting human rights, and
contributing both to the integrity of the teaching profession and to the delivery of quality
education in South Africa.
Stance
I agree with this definition, as it captures the multifaceted nature of a teacher’s role —
not only as a competent practitioner of education but also as an ethical and socially
accountable professional whose influence extends beyond the classroom into society at
large.
Supporting Reasons from the SACE Code of Professional Ethics
Firstly, the Code affirms that educators must “acknowledge the noble calling of their
profession to educate and train the learners of our country” and “acknowledge, uphold
and promote basic human rights, as embodied in the Constitution of South Africa”
