Study Guide: BASIC GEOMETRY CONCEPTS
SUBSETS OF A LINE
1. Point
• Has no length, width, or thickness
• Represents a location on a line
• Named by a capital letter (A, B, etc.)
2. Line Segment
• Part of a line with 2 endpoints
• Has measurable length
• Named by its endpoints (e.g., AB)
3. Ray
• Part of a line with 1 endpoint
• Extends endlessly in one direction
• Named by endpoint first, then another point (e.g., AB means starts at A, goes through B)
4. Infinite Line
• Extends endlessly in both directions
• No endpoints
• Named by any two points on the line (e.g., AB)
5. Collinear Points
• Points that lie on the same line
6. Non-collinear Points
• Points that do not lie on the same line
Visual Reference:
● (Point)
●----------● AB (Line Segment)
●---------> (Ray)
<---------> (Line)
Quick Facts:
• Subsets of a line: Point, Line Segment, Ray
• All can be named with letters
• Used to build geometric shapes and understand position on a straight path
