Chemical Reaction
What is a Chemical Reaction? A process in which one or more substances (reactants) are converted into new substances (products). Indications of a chemical reaction: Change in state (solid, liquid, gas) Change in color Evolution of gas Change in temperature or energy Example: Mg + O 2 → MgO Mg+O 2 →MgO Chemical Equation Representation of a reaction using symbols and formulae. Example: Zn + H 2 SO 4 → ZnSO 4 + H 2 Zn+H 2 SO 4 →ZnSO 4 +H 2 Balanced equation: Same number of atoms of each element on both sides. Balancing is done to obey the Law of Conservation of Mass. Types of Chemical Reactions Combination Reaction Two or more substances combine to form a single product.
