wouldn't.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE? ✔Correct answer-Working as a
radiographer (both student and qualified), i was able to work with all patients (medical and surgical)
and of all ages.
I have learnt to adapt my communication depending on the age, condition, language skills etc of the
patient.
If I am xraying a paeds patient, I will crouch down to be at their eye level. I will directly ask them
questions such as their birthday (3 point ID check) or ask them where it hurts. By giving the patient
this sort of confidence, i feel it makes them more willing to move to get into certain positions for
certain xray views.
If i am x-raying a hard of hearing patient, I will remove my mask so that they can lip read. I will also
use more body language to make the experience easier for them and myself.
These are some tips that I picked up during my placement that I have carried onto my qualified
practice. I believe they allow me to communicate better with patients and make imaging them a lot
easier.

supervising me and step back. But after a few weeks of working in the nursery, I learnt tips and tricks
to get children to cooperate more.

Especially after a stressful day at work, the gym really helps. When i am there I don't think about

definitely the lack of staffing all over the NHS. This is something that i have witnessed a student and
as a qualified radiographer.
Staff are overworked and underpaid. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a big backlog which still
affects hospitals to this day.
Lists are now double maybe triple the amount they used to be before the pandemic to catch up with
the backlog. For example, MOPs used to have 3-4 patients in the morning but now 10 plus patients
will get booked in. Although this does help catch up with the backlog, it is not healthy for staff to be
working like that on a daily basis.
IN WHAT WAY HAVE YOU SHOWN YOUR COMMITMENT TO STUDYING MEDICINE? ✔Correct
answer-There are three main ways that I have shown my commitment to medicine.
The first would be that I have watched surgeries such as Cornary artery bypass graft. (CABG) in my
free time as I wanted to see more than just the cases which required x-ray. I have also spent a few
days in hybrid theatres at SGH, where I saw a few limb amputation surgeries. As radiographers, we
don't get to see cases like this, so it was a very valuable experience for me.
The second is if there is time, I will ask surgeons and doctors any questions that I have about the
cases that we are on. They are more than happy to educate me. For example, I was doing. Faxitron
case where the breast tissue was green (first time i saw that). As the surgeon came into the
anesthetic room to have a look at the image, i asked them why it was green. He explained to me that
it was due to a magnetic dye that they had previously injected into the patient. Everyday I learn little
bits of knowledge like this for which I am super grateful.
The final way is that i have learnt to balance academic work, work and extracurricular activities. I
understand that medicine involves life long learning and it may not always be easy to have a good
work life balance- which is something that initially put me off medicine. However after starting full
time work, I have come to appreciate the importance of having this balance. I have tackled this my
planning my time well- even if I am working a shift on that day. I also give my self days off to just rest.
Even if I don't do anything, I know that I am doing something beneficial for my body and mental
health.
