Why is appreciation the basis for meditation practice? - ANS Being appreciative of your
surroundings allows you to extend beyond your thoughts and be in the present moment fully.
Appreciation allows our positive qualities to grow. The more appreciation we express, the more
likely it is that we will create a climate of appreciation in which ourselves and others will grow.
How does one relate to the body during meditation? - ANS Pay attention to the actual
sensations in your body, wherever they are, as you breath.
Your attention will naturally be drawn away from the sensations of the breath to other
sensations in your body, especially pain. It is important to learn to be steady through
uncomfortable sensations. Sitting still contributes greatly to peace of mind. It is equally
important not to cultivate a tendency towards strain by forcing yourself to sit through
unbearable pain. Be patient and kind to yourself. You will learn when to sit still and when to
move.
What role does the breath play in meditation? - ANS We focus on the breath, using the
physical sensation to anchor our attention. Experiencing the breath going in and out, trying to
find a way to breathe in and out without thinking about the breath or conceptualizing the
breath or watching the breath.

, that you are distracted by or start clinging to a thought, return to your breath. When thoughts
arise, don't suppress them, just let them come and go.
How should one work with emotions in meditation? - ANS Ponlop Rinpoche says, "It's only by
really tasting your experience of emotions that you get a taste of enlightenment." We don't
have to attach so much meaning to what arises, and we also don't have to identify with our
emotions so strongly. All we need to do is allow ourselves to experience the energy—and in
time it will move through you.
How should one work with sensations in meditation - ANS We feel the sensations but don't
react to them. We can learn to maintain this equanimity towards sensations by understanding
their transitory nature. We must experience sensation's nature, understand its flux, and learn
not to react to it. As we observe sensations without reacting to them, the impurities in our
minds lose their strength and cannot overpower us.
What does it mean to take your seat? - ANS The very process of showing up to meditation.
Your seat of practice is the area of your body making contact with the cushions, couch, chair or
floor beneath you. When you place your attention on 'your seat of practice' you invite all of the
mental tension you may be having to release.
What are the Four Noble Truths? - ANS They are the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause
of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of
suffering. More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to
bring about its end.
Truth of Suffering Qualities - ANS Truth of suffering: a) natural suffering - disasters, wars,
infections, etc.; b) self-inflicted suffering - habitual reacting and unnecessary anxiety and regret.
Truth of Origin Qualities - ANS Truth of the cause of suffering: craving for life to be other
than it is.
