Initial Counselling Session Implementation and Analysis
Counseling necessitates a counselor to use multiple micro-skills while building a
therapeutic alliance through evidenced-based practices for successful client support. This paper
reviews a first counseling meeting with a client named Sarah who experienced moderate work-
life balance anxiety. The session took place in a private counseling room allowing a face-to-face
meeting between me and the client who authorized written consent to record their session.
This paper analyzes Sarah's background information while examining my duties as the
counselor as well as the important micro-skills I exhibited during session interactions and
relationship development procedures. The analysis includes a session evaluation that examines
both positive aspects and difficult points with supporting evidence based on relevant research
and counseling theories.
Client Introduction and Demographic Circumstances
Sarah, a 32-year-old female, serves as a marketing manager in her demanding corporate
position. She belongs to the Caucasian ethnic group while being part of the middle class. Sarah
continues her professional path through the establishment phase as defined by Super’s (1990)
life-span theory by dedicating herself to building her career and establishing stability in it. Sarah
looking after her elderly parents.
The combination of Sarah’s cultural heritage and female gender creates unique stress and
anxiety factors. According to Eagly and Wood (2013), women frequently experience anxiety
because of social pressures surrounding caregiving alongside career progression (Eagly & Wood,
2013). Her current developmental position along with her life situations tends to make her
experience excessive feelings of being overwhelmed since she's simultaneously handling various
responsibilities.
, 3
The cultural identity of Sarah influences her manner of dealing with anxiety. The middle-
class Caucasian female background of this individual exposes her to social expectations of
achievement and success which intensify her stress and pressure according to Hofstede (2001).
Her responsibilities as a caregiving figure for her aging parents create further complications in
her life situation. Studies show that caregiving responsibilities together with work create
extensive stress and anxiety for caregivers (Pinquart & Sörensen, 2003). The counseling
approach needs a customized approach for Sarah because we need to understand these features
affecting her current situation.
My Initial Client Session
Counsellor Responsibilities
A counselor needs complete knowledge about how clients feel about their racial identity
along with their bias towards the counselor's racial background. The client-centered nature of
counseling makes client needs the main focus throughout the practice. A counselor performs
their work to help clients remove stress and trauma from their lives. The client's sentiments
feelings and beliefs along with traits and customs should always take precedence during therapy
sessions. Counselors must develop strong knowledge about their clients' racial cultural and
ethnic aspects to maximize the effectiveness of counseling sessions.
The main goal of my counseling role was to establish a secure environment where Sarah
could freely discuss her matters. The session required ethical compliance including protection of
confidentiality besides achieving consent while maintaining practice limits per American
Counseling Association [ACA] (2014) guidelines. I had an obligation to examine how Sarah's
concerns matched my area of practice expertise and how I could direct her toward proper
referrals if required.
, 4
The identified anxiety level of Sarah was mild-to-moderate which led me to conclude that
my professional competence aligned with her needs. The agreement between Sarah and me
included my promise of support for finding specialized assistance in case her concerns became
severe and she needed extra help.
A fundamental duty lies in building a therapeutic connection according to studies that
prove its effect on counseling success (Horvath & Luborsky, 1993). Multiple factors determine
the work practices of counseling professionals when helping clients from diverse cultural
backgrounds. The “relationship” between multicultural clients and counselors brings two
primary challenges which include the content of the client's “folder” while also bringing racial
stereotypes from their neighborhood into play (Horvath & Luborsky, 1993).
I demonstrated Rogers' (1957) approach to person-centered therapy by using empathy
together with active listening and showing unconditional positive regard. The establishment of a
space without criticism allowed me to develop trust with Sarah so she could freely express her
thoughts and feelings. The occasion required me to keep the session structured with defined
goals while delivering this responsibility. Setting the session’s goals included defining what we
would accomplish together, discovering the main causes of Sarah’s anxiety, and looking for
ways to handle her stress effectively. Research conducted by Lambert and Barley (2001) reveals
the essential role of goal-setting in counseling since it creates targeted purposes that benefit both
counselors and their clients.
Key Micro-Skills Demonstrated
Several micro-skills helped me communicate effectively with Sara and help her
understand her worries throughout the session. I applied a combination of micro-skills such as
active listening, paraphrasing, summarizing, and open-ended questioning.
