After watching the YouTube video, “NURSES: Their Vital Role in Transforming
Healthcare”, my perceptions regarding the role of advanced practice nurses changed
significantly. Earlier, I believed that advanced practice nurses cannot function independently
although they have ample freedom compared to normal nurse practitioners. However, the video
provides me with the information that even nurse practitioners can make independent decisions
at times.
As noted by Pedersen and Hack (2010), nurses can take additional responsibilities to improve
the standards of patient care. Nurses have the responsibility to navigate the healthcare system in
such a way that the patients get appropriate care at the appropriate time (Pedersen & Hack,
2010). More responsibility for educating patients and families about self-care, healthy habits, and
illness management could fall on nurse educators (Lorig et al., 2001). To address the social
determinants of health, nurses could also advocate for policy changes, conduct quality
improvement programs, and evaluate data (Hix et al., 2009).
Nurses can revolutionize the healthcare system if they possess ample awareness about the
difficulties patients face. It should be noted that nurses are the largest healthcare profession and
the one that interacts directly with patients (Institute of Medicine, 2011). As a result, they can
easily identify the inefficiencies existing in various parts of the healthcare system. They can
overcome these inefficiencies by putting evidence-based procedures into practice (Radwin,
1995). Nurses can take even leadership roles when it becomes necessary (Buerhaus et al., 2016).
I do believe that nurses' access to educational opportunities should be improved further to
enable greater healthcare transformation in Tennessee. At present nurses in Tennessee are getting
