Historiography - Definition, Nature and Scope of History
Historiography helps us understand that historical accounts are always, to some extent, interpretations. By recognizing the different "schools of thought" – such as Marxist, feminist, or postcolonial historiography – we can better assess the underlying assumptions and potential biases that inform any given historical narrative. This critical awareness allows us to engage with history not as a monolithic truth, but as a dynamic and evolving field of inquiry, ultimately leading to a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the past. Historiography refers to the study of how history has been written and interpreted throughout different periods, rather than the study of historical events themselves. It explores the different ways historians approach the past, the sources they use, their methodologies, and how their perspectives and biases might shape their narratives.
