This is the very first unit, and it is honestly a stroll (my opinion). However, sadly to say,
it only gets harder, so try to enjoy this easier chapter while you still can. Firstly, let’s
break down the main key points in this chapter.
1. The characteristics of living organisms
Let’s start with the characteristics of living organisms. So, what are “characteristics”?
Characteristics are basically features or qualities of something. Putting this together,
characteristics of living organisms means the qualities that living organisms all share. In
total, there are eight characteristics.
Vocabulary on the side: Characteristics: qualities or features of something; organism:
any individual living thing.
Need nutrition.
This characteristic means that the organism has the ability to eat and consume
nutrition.
Respire.
The ability to release energy from their food. Now, this might be very confusing.
Respiring does NOT equal breathing!! Respiration is a chemical process within the
body. Breathing, as we do as humans, are physical processes. Respiration will be
talked about more in a chapter fully about respiring, but the basic idea means that
respiration is a chemical process that happens within your cells, the tiny little circles
and flow in your body. Breathing on the other hand, happens in your lungs, where
you inhale and exhale.
Excrete.
To get rid of waste products. In other words, pee and poo for animals.
Respond to stimuli.
Side vocabulary: Stimuli: something that causes a response in another thing (example: if a
person touches me, they’re a stimuli to me)
