(Assignment 3)
Instructions:
Complete a brief analysis that includes a description of the Healthvana
innovation, a determination of the type of innovation, and Herzlinger’s six-factor
analysis to assist in assessing the potential impact of the Healthvana innovation
using Miller’s Impact Assessment Framework.
1. Describe the innovation. Describe the innovation and the problem it addresses.
The Healthvana innovation is a pilot program that is intended to decrease the overall time
from STI testing to treatment at an appropriate clinic. The Healthvana platform provides
real-time notification of STI test results, with the intention that the patient schedules an
appointment for treatment upon receiving their results. The purpose, other than increasing
convenience for the patient, is the deacrease the amount of time clinican staff spends on
the telephone trying to reach patients to verbally give them their results. This is an
example of a technology based venture, where the use of newer technology is used to
“connect the many separate islands of information in healthcare” (Herzlinger, 2013).
2. Determine the type of innovation. Determine and justify whether the
innovation is sustaining or disruptive.
This innovation can be seen as disruptive, as it is an introduction of newer technology that
changes regular practice, and is often more affordable than the original (InnosightInstitute,
2012). The fact that results could be communicated to patients more quickly and with less
time spent on the notification reinforces the idea that it is a disruptive innovation.
3. Analyze the innovation. Complete a six-factor analysis of the innovation
(based on Herzlinger’s “Innovating in Health Care—Framework”).
Structure Friend:
Who is a friend? Who is a foe? How much a) The clinical staff (providers, nurses, lab
power do they have to help or hurt the new personnel) are the primary users and used
venture? this technology to share information in a
more efficient manner than previously. This
group has a significant amount of power
over this venture, as they using it regularly
to report results to the patients.
b) Another friend to this would be the
leadership of the clinical staff, as this
process reduces the amount of time clinical
staff need to be on telephone making
repeat attempts at phone calls. This group
has a significant amount of power over this
program, as they can influence the
continuation of the program if it
demonstrates cost saving or increased
productivity.
