to solve, and the manner in which it will solve the problem.
The innovation that I researched is a clinical support tool that uses artificial intelligence to
provide real-time clinical guidance for emergency department nurses during the triage
process. This innovation, named KATE Triage, was developed by Mednition, a company
that uses AI to assist medical professionals with decision-making. The KATE Triage tool
helps to solve several problems in the emergency department (ED), especially addressing
the complexity of ED Triage and nurse accuracy in the process. According to Brooks
(2024), KATE Triage uses “historical patient encounter data to help inform future decisions
regarding ESI acuity” (p.35). The AI innovation uses electronic health records to collect and
use data in a new way, effectively collecting information as it is input by the nurse.
According to Mednition (2024), “it’s improving the accuracy of their acuity assignments
which allows them to provide the right care to the right patients at the right time”. This
tool can be especially helpful in providing real-time feedback to the nurse with a
recommendation for triage acuity, listing the justification for that decision. This is ideal in
reinforcing the education and training ED nurses receive in triage, and can also help
supplement a newer nurse’s triage education.
