stress
Refers to the psychologically disturbing events or events with psychological
associations involving long-term overload
Stressors- stimuli that cause stress
- External stimuli- e.g. predators, dealing with dominants or competing for food
- Cognitive processes- loss of control in a previously instrumental situation
- Physiological stressors- e.g. loss of blood which leads to seeking water and salt
Four criteria of stress
1. Over time, action occurs in response to a situation, but it fails to correct this
situation
2. There is excessive and protracted activity in neurohormonal systems. Typically, this
would be the sympathetic branch and the system that secretes corticosteroids from
the adrenal gland or both
3. There is a vulnerability to certain pathology e.g. gastric ulceration, hypertension,
depression and disorders associates with suppression of the immune system
4. There is a tendency to show apparently pointless behaviours e.g. stereotypes or
inflicting self-harm
