Since the first struggle for independence flared in 1810, the Church has played a
significant role in Mexico's national history. Chronicle the history of the Church-State
conflict and assess the central issues of contention. - ANSWER-The church starts to
manipulate the government (no more mass, confessions, baptism and other religious
sacraments) the government was constantly trying to undermine the church. The
government ends the church's monopoly in power.
From the beginning of the relation of Mexico with Spain, the Church was the first to
want to break with Spain. The first revolutionary people were priests of the Catholic
church. The first one was Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla who did the Grito de Dolores on

When Mexico claimed its independence from Spain, the Catholic Church was given
rights in the constitution of 1824. Those rights were the right of fueros, education to
all students, while also giving the right to land to the church to use for cultivation for
personal uses.
About 20 years later...
Mexico and the United States get into a fight over a land dispute and Mexico and the
United States go to war.
Mexico asks for help from England, Spain, and France. They all said no... so the last
chance for help was from the Catholic church which also said no.
Mexico was no good...the Mexican people were more loyal to the Church rather to
the government because the Church was teaching the child from a young age to be
loyal to the church.
Here comes along Benito Juarez in 1846 to help fight off the Americans... by 1850
Juarez helps to create reform within Mexico.
1917 comes around and there is a new constitution that is being pushed out with
new Articles 3, 27, 123.
Article 3- the church no longer has control of the education of students in Mexico,
students will now have to go to school
