Complete a brief analysis that includes a description of the Hackensack innovation, a
determination of the type of innovation, and Herzlinger’s six-factor analysis to assist in
assessing the potential impact of the Hackensack innovation using Miller’s Impact
Assessment Framework.
1. Describe the innovation. Describe the innovation and the problem it addresses.
The innovation of the outpatient, mobile disease monitoring and management tool
addresses the problem of recurrent and prevalent admissions in the elderly population
with chronic health disorders.
2. Determine the type of innovation. Determine and justify whether the innovation is
sustaining or disruptive.
I believe that while this innovation has both aspects of disruptive and sustaining, it is
more of a disruptive innovation for the following reasons:
1. A significant change in workflow and patient management by implementing a new
device.
2. A decrease in readmission rates by >20% within 30 days of patients who utilized
this device.
3. The ability to expand the device use to other patient populations including younger
patients, chronically ill patients, etc.
4. Collection of data that is then automatically integrated into the patient EMRs.
5. New/unique workflow for nurse navigators in patient follow-up and app
maintenance.
3. Analyze the innovation. Complete a six-factor analysis of the innovation (based on
Herzlinger’s “Innovating in Health Care—Framework”).
-
Friends:
- Nurse navigators
o Teaching patients the needed
steps for using the devices
o Easing older patients’ anxiety
about trying out new
technology
Structure o Intervening with “triggered”
Who is a friend? Who is a foe? How much alerts from patients
power do they have to help or hurt the new o Setting up outpatient
venture? appointments and follow-up
appointments
- Physicians who support this
technology innovation and are
proactive in suggesting/offering the
resource to patients.
- Institutional support for the
innovation
