Illustrate Western Boundary Currents:
1. Illustrate Northern hemisphere
subtrop- ical gyres:
2. ???? What is WESTERN intensification? Water moving eastward (in the westerly
wind
band) is deflected more than water
moving
westward (in the trade wind zone.)
3. What happens in the WESTERLY zone? Water is transported towards the gyre
centre
over the entire ocean width.
4. What happens in the TRADE WIND zone? Very little deflection; flow pushes water
to west
side of the ocean.
5. Where is the centre of a GYRE? The centre of a Gyre is ottset to the west.
6. Where is pressure gradient larger? It is larger on the west side (due to the
steeper
slope.) Stronger Geostrophic currents.
7. What does it indicate when pycnocline is also pushed

down? Page 3
If the pycnoclines pushed down, it means

& faster.
