Intrinsic and Extrinsic Approaches to the Study of Literature
Introduction
Literary studies have long been divided between two primary approaches: those that
focus on the intrinsic qualities of a text and those that emphasize extrinsic, contextual
factors. The intrinsic approach prioritizes the text as an aesthetic object, concentrating
on its form, language, structure, and internal coherence. This perspective gave rise to
movements such as Formalism and New Criticism, which argue for the autonomy of the
literary work, viewing it as self-contained and independent of the author’s life, the
reader’s interpretation, or its cultural context. In contrast, the extrinsic approach treats
literature as a cultural artifact, deeply embedded in and shaped by historical, social,
political, and ideological forces. This perspective underpins schools of thought such as
Marxist criticism, feminism, and postcolonial theory, each of which highlights power
relations, identity, and social contexts in the interpretation of texts.
This essay critically compares intrinsic and extrinsic approaches to literary study. It
explores their theoretical assumptions, identifies the critical practices they inspire,
assesses their strengths and limitations, and discusses how they might complement
each other in contemporary literary analysis. The argument put forth is that while
intrinsic methods provide rigorous tools for close reading, extrinsic approaches offer
valuable insights into literature’s societal relevance. An integrated approach combining
both perspectives yields the richest and most comprehensive interpretations.
