Protein Metabolism
ZOOACOR07T

,Protein metabolism = Amino acid metabolism
Proteins are digested in the gastrointestinal
tract into the amino acids by proteolytic
enzymes. Amino acids actively transported
across the intestinal wall into the portal
circulation and are carried to the liver.
 The liver is the principal organ responsible for
the degradation and synthesis of amino acids.
The amino acids obtained from the digestion
are transported by the blood to all the tissues
of the body.
So protein metabolism is equivalent to amino
acid metabolism.

,The protein on degradation(catabolism)
release individual amino acids. Each amino
acids undergoes its own metabolism &
performs specific functions.

, Amino Acid pool
The amino acid pool contain the total amount
of amino acid from diet, protein recycling,
non-essential amino acids produced by the
body that is available for metabolic
processing.
About 100 gm of free amino acid which
represent the amino acid pool of the body.
Glutamate & Glutamine together constitute
about 50% & essential amino acids about
10% of the body pool(100gm).
