Hypersensitivity Reactions (McCance Ch. 9)




Type I Immediate (IgE-Mediated)

- Mechanism: IgE binds to mast cells degranulation histamine release.

- Examples: Anaphylaxis, hay fever.

- Symptoms: Wheezing, itching, hypotension.

- Treatment: Epinephrine.




Type II Cytotoxic (Tissue-Specific)

- Mechanism: IgG/IgM antibodies bind to antigens on cells complement activation cell
damage.

- Examples: Graves disease (stimulatory), transfusion reaction (destructive).




Type III Immune Complex-Mediated

- Mechanism: Antigen-antibody complexes deposit in tissues inflammation.

- Examples: SLE, RA, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.




Type IV Delayed (T-Cell Mediated)

- Mechanism: T-cell activation cytokine release inflammation.

- Examples: Poison ivy, TB test.




Immunodeficiency & Autoimmunity (McCance Ch. 9 + E-dapt: Immune Response)

- Primary Immunodeficiency: Genetic defect (e.g., CVI) low immunoglobulins.
