Introduction
The first order cybernetic (FOC) perspective applies systems theory to family dynamics,
conceptualising the family as a self-regulating system that maintains balance through
feedback loops, interactional rules, and boundaries (Bateson, 1972; von Bertalanffy,
1968). Symptoms are not treated as problems located within individuals but as signals
of dysfunction in the wider system. In this case, Jake’s depressive symptoms are better

with Jake. This imbalance created a cycle in which David distances himself, Laura
compensates by intensifying emotional involvement with Jake, and Jake withdraws
further in response. From a FOC viewpoint, Jake’s depression is not an isolated
disorder but a systemic signal that the family’s equilibrium is breaking down (Nichols &
