Introduction

For the following Media Assignment, I have decided to use a current issue during the
times of a global pandemic, Coronavirus also known as Covid-19. I have reviewed
several new articles and eventually decided to elucidate the correlation between Air
pollution and Covid-19.

Reviewed article

This is a following article from BBC which caught my eye. It delineates the correlation
between Covid-19 and air pollution especially in nations with large populations and
severe air-quality drop over the last few decades due to urbanization.

There’s a murky relationship between air pollution and coronavirus,
which may mean that tackling air pollution will be a crucial part of
easing lockdown.

Clear blue skies over the world’s megacities have become a visible mark of the pandemic. It’s a
welcome change for many, not least because outdoor air pollution kills around 4.2 million
people worldwide each year.

But when it comes to Covid-19, these risks to respiratory health are not the sum of their parts;
researchers in the US are building a case that suggests air pollution has significantly worsened
the Covid-19 outbreak and led to more deaths than if pollution-free skies were the norm. As well
as predisposing the people who have lived with polluted air for decades, scientists have also
suggested that air pollution particles may be acting as vehicles for viral transmission.

Critical Evaluation

1) What is the author’s central purpose?

- The central purpose behind the peer reviewed article by Luigi and Paolo
Martelletti was to elucidate the effects and correlation of air pollution in a region
and Covid-19. They explain how an increase in air pollution levels tends to
increase the chances of respiratory diseases and especially during the times of
this global pandemic can escalate the chances of contracting Covid.

2) What methods were used to accomplish this purpose (systematic
recording of observations, analysis and evaluation of published research,
assessment of theory)?

- The methods used in order to achieve the results for the author’s hypothesis was
to collect data about the number of cases of Covid-19 in regions with lower air
quality and with higher air quality and find whether there is a correlation between
air pollution and Covid-19.
