Survey of U.S. History Task 3: Reconstruction and the Age of American Imperialism Task 3: Reconstruction and the Age of American Imperialism A. Discuss three major changes in race relations (i.e., laws, amendments, labor arrangements, working conditions, migration patterns, socioeconomic changes) that resulted from Reconstruction (suggested length of 2–3 paragraphs). One major change that resulted from the Reconstruction was the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865. This amendment abolished slavery, except as a punishment for crime. African American men and women were finally able to experience freedom. The Freedmen’s Bureau was created to help the former slaves get settled in society. As the African Americans went on looking for jobs and houses, they learned that there would still be animosity from white people. (Norton, 2015) Another change from the Reconstruction was the Reconstruction Act of 1867. This act gave African American men the right to vote and serve in state constitutional conventions. Racism grew as a result of this act. (Norton, 2015) A third change from the Reconstruction was the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870. This prohibited states from denying votes based on race, color and if one was previously a slave.
