The origins of the EU:
1. Problem after Second World War: Coal and steel deposits in the
Saarland and the Ruhr area
2. Solution: Schuman Declaration of 9th May 1950 -> Now Europe

Commission)
- Economic integration as basis for keeping peace in Europe.
4. Became the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)
− Established in1951 by the Treaty of Paris
− Founding MS: France, (West) Germany, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg,
the Netherlands
5. Basis for the European Economic Community (EEC)
− Established in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome
“The EU internal market is at the very heart of the European integration
process”
− WHY? The EU (EEC back then) inherently and historically associated with
the conceptual idea of free trade
− Free trade and interconnectedness (onderlinge verbondenheid) of MS
economies is positive not only for conflict prevention but also for
prosperity
