C815: Quality and Performance Management and Methods Task 3: Performance Improvement Management Part A1: Workplace Standards and Guidelines In the typical management hierarchy, there are three levels: top (or executive) managers, middle managers, and first-line (supervisory) managers. Executive managers set objectives according to the organization’s mission and vision statements; they plan and make decisions at the highest levels and are responsible for overseeing and controlling the entire organization. Examples are the CEO, president, or board of directors. At the middle level, managers are responsible for executing the organizational plans to comply with all applicable internal policies and external accrediting or legal requirements for their department. They act as an intermediary between executive management and the first-line supervisors. Examples of middle-level managers are those that are responsible for a single department, such as the health information management (HIM) department, the dietary department, or the nursing department (Lumen Learning, 2017).
