Pride and prejudice
Written by Jane Austen
Summary
In the beginning of the story, a rich man named Mr. Bingley comes to rent an estate. This
estate is called Netherfield Park. Mrs. Bennet has long held out hope that one of her
daughters will marry. Mr. Bingley is a perfect wealthy partner for one of her daughters. Mr.
Bingley is with his friend Mr. Darcy, who is even wealthier than Mr. Bingley. Soon into the
story, Mr. Bingley and Jane Bennet (Mr. Bennet's eldest daughter) fall in love with each other.
Then Elizabeth Bennet (the second oldest daughter) meets Mr. Darcy. This did not click well
at first because Mr. Darcy did not want to dance with Elizabeth at the ball. Elizabeth got an
arrogant and unpleasant impression of Mr. Darcy because of this. Then Elizabeth met
another rich man, Mr. Wickham. He tells Elizabeth that Mr. Darcy deprived him of an
inheritance. Next, Elizabeth also finds out that Mr. Darcy is making sure that Jane and Mr.
Bingley do not get married because he thinks Jane only wants him for the money. Because of
this, Elizabeth gets a worse and worse view of Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth goes to Charlotte, who is
married to Mr. Collins, who is a cousin of the Bennet family. Lady Catherine de Bourgh is a
wealthy and arrogant woman who is Mr. Darcy aunt. Mr. Darcy comes to Elizabeth's house
and spends a lot of time with her. One day Mr. Darcy asks her to marry him, but Elizabeth
rejects him. He has divorced Jane and Bingley and he has been bad to Mr. Wickham, so
Elizabeth did not see fit. Mr. Darcy writes a letter to Elizabeth explaining why he doesn't think
Jane is really in love with Bingley. He also says that Mr. Wickham is a liar who has caused his
family much trouble. Elizabeth begins to realize that she has been too quick to judge Mr.
Darcy. Elizabeth finds out that Lydia, her younger sister, left Mr. Wickham without getting
married. This is a big deal for the family. Mr. Darcy intervenes without anyone knowing and
arranges for Wickham to marry Lydia, saving the honor of the Bennet family. Elizabeth is
deeply impressed by Mr. Darcy's courage. Mr. Bingley returns to Netherfield and he and Jane
fall in love again. They become engaged and plan their wedding. Meanwhile, Darcy returns to
Elizabeth and asks her to marry him again. This time she accepts his proposal and they realize
that their prejudices have gotten in the way of real feelings. The story ends with two happily
married couples.
