The influences on Luther’s views;
- Luther came from humble beginnings (he claimed he was the son of a peasant but
his family were actually reasonably successful farmers in thuringia - his mothers side
were also incredibly successful lawyers and magistrates. One of his maternal cousins
was a professor of medicine at wittenberg university)
- His father, hans, placed great emphasis on the importance of Luther's education
(sending him to a local school in mansfeld and then a grammar school in magdeburg)
he then attended university in erfurt. There was an emphasis on memory in his
school curriculum (which was a predetermined and compulsory liberal arts bachelor
and masters before choosing to specialise in law, medicine or theology)
- Luther became obsessed with ideas of his own salvation, an incident with a knife
almost took his life and many friends died of plague. Then he got caught in a storm
1505 and prayed to st anne if he made it out alive he would become a monk, he did
so he became a monk. Speculation this story was to placate his father or created
later to prove he was chosen by god.
- Eventually, in order to stop Luther's ceaseless confessions, his mentor von staupitz
brought his attention to the work of the order’s patron, St. Augustine of Hippo, who
stressed man's actions had no impact on whether or not he was saved; it was instead
entirely up to god. (this was markedly different to rome's teaching on salvation
influenced by thomas aquinas)
- Staupitz suggested Luther go to university to study a degree in theology.
- Increased emphasis on humanism in higher education. They wanted to return to the
original sources, placing emphasis on understanding the author and what he wrote,
not just memorising.

his views on corruption within the Catholic Church.
- 1510 Luther was sent to Rome on business of augustinian order by von staupitz.
- He was a fervent pilgrim, visiting sacred relics and climbing the scala sancta on his
knees while praying for the soul of his grandfather
- However this did not bring him the spiritual reprieve he had hoped and he was
unimpressed by the worldliness and incenserity of Rome's clergy.
- When he returned from Rome Luther was transferred to wittenberg university to
teach. Wittenberg was a horrendous town (even melanchthon was negative about it
in 1519 x
- He became professor of biblical theology and got caught up in the debate of every
university at the time, should they follow a medieval scholastic approach or new
humanist one. Luther opted for a humanist approach (unlike many wittenberg
scholars) coming to this conclusion based on his study of the bible.
- His study brought him closer to the assertion of st augustine of hippo (sola fide) but
this was not a new idea, had been expressed by Jacques Lefevre d’Etaples in 1512.

The Ninety-Five Theses 1517:
Luther’s rejection of indulgences;
- Frederick the wise had already banned tetzel from selling indulgences in his land
(largely a result of money and politics as tetzel's employer, albert of mainz was his
biggest rival for influence in the empire) Also while the pope's indulgences were sold
