Pharmacognosy is the systematic study of the crude drugs obtained from
natural sources like plants, animals, minerals, microbes and marines.
Major sources of Natural Drugs :-
Plants : Herbs, Seeds, Roots, Bark (e.g. Neem, Tulsi, Clove)
Animals : Honey, Wax, Silk, Glandular Extracts (e.g. Insulin, Shark Liver
Oil)
Minerals : Chalk, Talc, Kaolin, Bentonite
Microbes and Marine : Antibiotics, Salts, Bioactive Marine Compounds
Scope of Pharmacognosy :-
