coelomates, acoelomates, pseudocoelomates
Acoelomates, coelomates, and pseudocoelomates describe three fundamental body plans in animals, differentiated by the presence, or absence, and the lining of their internal body cavity (the coelom) by the mesoderm germ layer. Acoelomates lack a true coelom, having instead mesenchyme (connective tissue) between their germ layers, with flatworms as a common example. Pseudocoelomates possess a fluid-filled body cavity (pseudocoelom) that is not fully lined by mesoderm, with roundworms (nematodes) being a key example. Coelomates (or eucoelomates) have a true coelom, a body cavity that is completely enclosed and lined by mesoderm, a feature found in annelids, mollusks, and chordates.
