Delegation - answer allowing a delegate to perform a specific nursing activity, skill, or
procedure that is beyond traditional role and not routinely performed
delegation responsibility - answer a nursing activity, skill, or procedure...transferred from
a licensed nurse to a delegate
Accountability - answer-to be answerable to oneself and other for one's own choices,
decisions, and actions, as measured against a standard
-RNs legally liable for their actions related to patient care
-Delegator transfer responsibility and authority for completing a task to delegatee;
however, the delegator maintains accountability for task's completion
delegator - answer individual who delegates a nursing responsibility
assistive personnel or unlicensed nursing personnel - answer nursing assistants who do
not hold a nursing license
delegatee - answeran individual who is delegated "a nursing responsibility by a RN, is
competent to perform it and verbally accepts the responsibility"
assignment - answerroutine care, activities and procedures within the authorized scope
of practice of the RN or LPN or part of the routine functions of UNP/AP
communication - answer-two way exchange between the delegator and delegatee
-nurse must provide communication that is clear, concise, timely and reliable to produce
safe and efficient person centered care
-ex: giving info, giving direction, giving clarity, giving advice
organizational accountability - answer-Secure necessary resources for healthcare team
to provide safe/effective person-centered care
-Relationship-based model (building positive relationships with patients, professionals
-Shared governance model
individual accountability - answer-individuals ability to explain actions, requires one to
be answerable
legal authority - answer-nurses retain accountability for safe and effective patient
centered care (legally responsible, person must be supervised)
-must ensure task is completed by right person
-not being knowledgeable about scope of practice/standards/policies is not a legal
defense!
