Psyche means ALL of my human mind--what I'm conscious of and what I'm
not conscious of as well.
Pathos is a Greek word that means disease. Think of the word pathogens for
example. It's something that is seen as dirty and bad.
And the root word -ology means to study something. So it all comes together
to create the word PSYCHOPATHOLOGY. "To study a diseased/ disturbed
mind."
What IS Clinical Psychology anyway?

passed down or runs in the family

The person will be normal and develop just like anyone else and then BOOM!
They start showing signs of mental illness/ schizophrenia
What are the two MAIN THINGS a clinician needs to learn to do when
understanding any and all mental disorders?
1. We must ASK QUESTIONS
2. We must DO RESEARCH
Why is asking questions and conducting research so important?
It's important because the information that I gather from asking the RIGHT
kind of questions can be put up against all existing research to draw a
reasonable conclusion about the person's mental disorder.
Explain the fluidity of psychopathology's treatments?
Treatments come, go, and grow. We may find new evidence or research that
may make a previous treatment obsolete. What we did 5 or 10 years ago
may not be acceptable now. The mental health field in general is always
growing.
What do we mean by Abnormality?
While there may be INDICATORS of strange behavior, the word abnormal is
subjective. There's no true universal definition. Now if the person has
, SEVERAL INDICATORS like talking to themselves, hearing voices, or dressing
oddly for the weather then their behavior may fall into the abnormal territory.
What's an example of an INDICATOR?
An indicator is any observable evidence that I see that may hint at deeper
issues or mental illness. A person cutting themselves or burning themselves
on purpose are both examples of INDICATORS
Define subjective distress.
Subjective distress is some form personalized of suffering that someone
experiences. It's unique to the person because that person may be
TRIGGERED by loud noises or banging pots and start to feel anxious.
Meanwhile, another person may be totally cool with loud noise but may
become anxious when they think someone is going to break up with them.
So their suffering and triggers are unique to them.
Define maladaptiveness.
Maladaptiveness is any behavior that disrupts my relationships or ability to
function in society in general. It's basically not adjusting or responding to
your environment in a healthy way. For example, I may cope with my fear of
sex by binge watching pornography and creating an escapist fantasy world
rather than interact with the opposite sex.
Do all disorders involve maladaptive behavior?
