Multiplying and dividing algebraic expressions
LEARNING INTENTIONS
To review how to multiply and divide algebraic expressions
SUCCESS CRITERIA
1. I know that in Algebra, I do not show the multiplication sign
2. I know to multiply numbers first and then deal with the pronumerals.
3. When dividing, I know to write as a fraction first.
4. I know how to cancel numbers and like terms.
KEY IDEAS
Any algebraic terms can be multiplied or divided. They do not have to be like terms.
To multiply algebraic terms:
• multiply the coefficients
• multiply the pronumerals.
To divide algebraic terms:
• express the division as a fraction
• divide the coefficients
• divide the pronumerals.
EXAMPLES
1. Simplify each of the following
(a) a 8
(b) 6m 2d
