Psychology of Sexuality - Lecture 1

Lecture 1 – How and why do people have sex?
The key to a good sex life is a good biological and psychological understanding of the body. You have
to be able to communicate what your body needs and your partner’s.
We look at sexuality from three perspectives: biological, psychological and social & cultural aspects.
We are also taught about the clinical side, when sexual behaviour goes wrong and how this can be
fixed. We talk about different cultural views on sexuality.

Evolution – people have developed several persistent behaviours, we can see this in choice of
partner. In relationships, the man is usually older than the woman and the man provides resources
for the woman. This doesn’t mean for everyone, but for the majority.

,Software – the culture in which people grow up, the family, education system, religion. You learn
how to think about sex, how you should behave sexually. We learn what to like and what not to like
and which things are taboo.
Sexologist – when sexuality doesn’t work out.
As computers get older they develop their limitations.
Joan Price – lecture on sex and aging, guest lecture.
The book is good!!!
The exam material is the handbook except for chapter 12. Including the lectures and in the videos
online. The exam probably will be a multiple choice exam.
We have a total of 13 lectures.

Sex. We all think we know what sex is, but we all mean different things. We often phrase it in
metaphors. First base, second base, home run, birds and bees. People don’t talk about it a lot.
Love is not a requirement for sex in many cultures.

Reproduction is just one aspect of sex.

Sex is complex.

, Sex is influenced by biology, social factors and psychological factors.
Biology – we have a body. In life there are 2 things that are certain, you are going to die and for the
time, you have to do with your body.
Our body has hormones. Hormones influence our behaviour. Substances such as alcohol and drugs
have an influence on sexuality.
Psychology – our personality influences how we have sex and how we behave. Our mood affects our
desires.
Social – conditioning, learnt behaviour, what to like and what not to like. Religion or cultures. You are
taught the norms of sexual behaviour in your society.
Sex in English is both a verb and a noun. Sex as doing it and sex as gender. Sexuality is about the
sexual act but also about how you think about sex.

How do people have sex?
- Not
o Asexuality; some people do not feel the urge to have sex. They don’t have the desire
to have sex. 1% of the population. A lack of desire. Many of them do have a
relationship or do want to have a relationship. They do have sex out of love, or
because their partner wants to, but they don’t need it themselves. There is nothing
wrong with those people. Treat it as a sexual orientation.
o Voluntary celibacy; they have a sexual desire but refrain from acting on it. Partial
celibacy is where you do masturbate. It can be religious or by waiting for marriage.
o Involuntary celibacy; when your partner has died. People find it difficult after a long
relationship to start a new sexual affair with someone. There can be institutional
restrictions, when you’re in a hospital or a nursing home. They are not made for
older people to have sex. Or when your partner loses interest in having sex. Over
time the sexual drive dissipates of one of the partners and this can be very
frustrating for the partner that does want sex. Often the relationship remains but
there is no longer sex. Incel is short for involuntary celibate. Incels are members of
an online subculture, people who cannot find a romantic partner despite desiring
one. Usually white heterosexual boys. They are full of resentment, cynicism, racism.
With a sense of entitlement to sex. When they don’t get what they want, they can
turn to violence (US).
- Solitary sexual behaviours; sex by yourself.
